BLACKPOOL’S CALEB RICHARDS WINS CHECKATRADE TROPHY PLAYER OF THE ROUND

11th December 2017

Blackpool FC’s Caleb Richards has picked up the second Checkatrade Player of the Round Award of the season for his outstanding performance against Middlesbrough U21 at Bloomfield Road earlier this month.

Making his first competitive start in an unfamiliar right-back position, the 19-year-old showed his mature reading of the game to make two goal line clearances and produced a fine cross to set up Blackpool’s opening goal in the 4-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Caleb Richards, Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round, said: “We performed really well as a team and to be able to make such a contribution personally, on my first competitive start, made the victory even sweeter.

“The Checkatrade Trophy has given me a fantastic opportunity to join the senior team and I’m really happy that I’ve been able to help Blackpool progress through the competition and take one step closer to a Wembley final – which would be massive for this club.”

Blackpool topped their group courtesy of their impressive victory over Middlesbrough U21s. Boro’s North-East rivals didn’t fair any better, with Newcastle United falling to a 4-1 defeat against Oldham Athletic. However, the fixture of the round honours belong to Gillingham and Reading who played out an exhilarating 7-5 thriller, with the victory sending the Gills through to the next round.

The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round competition gives fans the opportunity to vote for the player they feel performed best during the second round of fixtures. Blackpool FC fans voted on mass for their young star, making sure he collected the second Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round trophy of the season.

Caleb was joined on the shortlist by other standout performers from the Checkatrade Trophy:

• Jack Byrne (Oldham Athletic)
• Jordan Graham (Fulham)
• Erico Sousa (Accrington Stanley)
• Scott Wagstaff (Gillingham)
